The Red Lion
Mortimer West End
The Red Lion Inn did not start life as a public house. In the early 1700s it was a small farm house known as Kinchins named after the land owner Simeon Kinchin. In 1794 the Red Lion became a public house after William Stephens of Aldermaston, a brewer acquired the property to dispense his wares. With the Red lion opposite the village pump it was in a prime location, as the water in beer is sterilised in the brewing process unlike the water from the well!
